Evidence of the climate crisis appears daily in newspapers around the world. I select the news that most impresses me monthly and make a compilation in the Apocalypse Bulletin. The first bulletins were only in Portuguese. This is the first one with an English version as well.

In the United States, drought hits several states, making the situation of forest fires much worse. According to CBS News, scorching heat and drought are fueling fires in several states. On July 22, Reuters reported that 100 million Americans had received intense heat warnings. Among the fires, Oak Fire in Yosemite National Park (California) was highlighted with authorities warning that the wildfire’s unpredictable behavior is unprecedented.

On July 27th, the city of Lytton, Canada, made headlines again (this city caught fire in 2021 when it reached 49.6ºC) bacause the temperature exceeded 42ºC. Several other cities in Canada were under intense heat alert. CBC News 7/25/2022

In Texas there was a blackout due to the intense heat that was causing the cooling devices to suck all the energy from the system (ABC News 14/07/2022). Something similar happened in Japan: after a blackout in Kawaguchi, the recommendation was for people to prepare for the heat wave by storing rechargeable batteries and ice packs. The temperature is rising and the human body has limits: some say that from 35ºC the temperature starts to become dangerous for the maintenance of the functioning of the organs. Portugal and Spain had more than 1700 fatalities in July due to the heat wave (Andalu Agency 15/07/2022). A report by The Guardian says this is the worst drought in the region in 1200 years!

In India, in Ahmedabad alone, it rained 219 mm in just one night. The rain was widespread and 388 highways had to be closed. Times of India 11/07/2022

In just 4 days, cities in the state of Alagoas (Brazil) have already reached the average rainfall for the entire month of July (CNN 07/04/2022). In 60 days, it rained 1000 mm (Correio dos Municípios 07/05/2022). The Civil Defense issued a warning of heavy rains for the capital, Maceió (G1 07/09/2022).
In Pakistan, temperatures passed 50°C again, accompanied by torrential rains. (ANI 10/07/2022). The Twitter below talks of at least 77 dead, with impressive images. ⇓
And Egypt also has news of excessive heat accompanied by high humidity. (Egypt Independent 10/07/2022).

The government of Rome has declared an emergency due to lack of water, and the drought threatens even the availability of drinking water! DW 05/07/2022 According to Reuters, the affected areas are around the Po River, which is involved in almost 1/3 of the country’s agricultural production! And it’s not just Rome in Italy that is suffering from a lack of water: Lake Maggiore has only 30% of water, and the famous Lake Como, with 50%. (Breaking Latest News 10/07/2022).

The month of July has already started well in Australia: in Sydney it rained more than 4 times the monthly volume in just 1 day!!! Sky News 03/07/2022 And the rain still hasn’t stopped, forcing thousands to evacuate the city (Al Jazeera 05/07/2022). There were 2 floods that were supposed to happen once every 500 years, happening 6 months apart.
Also in Australia (in New South Wales) the excess of rain meant that they were only able to plant half of the seeds (ABC Rural 04/07/2022). Here are the explanations of one of the farmer interviewed:
- “There is a 3-4 week window for planting rapeseed. Unfortunately, the incessant rain made us miss that window.”
- “The canola we planted in April drowned because, instead of raining the normal 10 to 20 mm predicted, it rained 90 mm, flooding the paddocks “
- “We had never seen so much rain at the beginning of the year.”
Part of a glacier collapsed in the Italian Alps due to record temperatures, killing 6 people. (Reuters 04/07/2022) Remembering that in the heat wave in Pakistan, a bridge collapsed by the rapid melting of a glacier that caused a dam to overflow. There is evidence and more evidence of the climate crisis.
Tokyo sets record for extreme temperatures for 9 consecutive days. The government asked everyone, companies and people, to save energy so that there are no cuts. Japan Times 03/07/2022
